Zakharova: There can be no peace in Ukraine without Russia – What she said about Zelensky’s proposals – 2024-04-26 02:36:20

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said any talks to end the conflict in Ukraine would be meaningless without Russian participation, referring to a conference Switzerland plans to host.

Zakharova also told reporters that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s peace formula, which calls for the complete withdrawal of Russian forces from all the territories they have occupied, does not bring peace closer but prolongs the conflict.

Switzerland announced earlier this month that it would host a two-day high-level meeting on June 15-16 to achieve peace in Ukraine. Russia has said it will not take part and the Kremlin has said the idea of holding peace talks without Moscow is absurd.

The Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman also said that any nuclear weapons developed in Poland would be legitimate targets in the event of an armed conflict with the NATO military alliance.

Zakharova also stated that the US is trying to create divisions between Russia and China. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken is visiting China today.

“As for the United States’ attempts to drive a wedge in relations between Russia and China, the United States is speaking out about it,” he said.

She added that Russia’s relationship with China – with which it signed a “borderless” cooperation agreement less than three weeks before the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine – is not directed against any other country.

Regarding the issue of nuclear weapons in Poland, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov made similar statements, according to which:

“…Moves in this direction will not provide greater security (to Poland or other countries hosting such weapons),” Ryabkov said today, according to the TASS news agency.

On Monday, April 22, Polish President Andrzej Duda said that Warsaw is ready to host nuclear weapons on its soil if NATO, of which it is a member, decides to strengthen its eastern flank to counter the development of new weapons by Russia in Kaliningrad and Belarus.

“If our allies decided to deploy nuclear weapons on our territory to strengthen the security of NATO’s eastern flank, we are ready to do so,” the Polish president explained to the Fakty newspaper.
