The official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Maria Zakharova, commented on the appearance of the Ukrainian national football team at Euro 2020 with a uniform depicting Crimea as part of Russia and the slogan of the UPA (banned in the Russian Federation). Zakharova noted that this is “trompe l’oeil”, or trompe l’oeil – a technique that creates the illusion of the impossible.
As for the slogan “Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the heroes! ”, It is part of the policy of the Ukrainian state to consolidate new meanings in the public mind. “Kiev wants to distance this slogan from its inconvenient origin and fill it with a new positive meaning, so that the whole world would perceive it exclusively as progressive and in harmony with the global agenda,” says Zakharova.
The representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that this slogan was used by the Ukrainian irregular Ukrainian units that fought on the side of Germany during the Second World War. The surviving UPA veterans advocated this slogan, and sought to cleanse it of the crimes committed during the war. The organizers of Euro 2020 should be aware of this, Zakharova added.
