Remuneration for high state officials, including the Prime Minister, ministers and deputies of the Saeima, is determined in accordance with the procedure specified in the Law on Remuneration of Officials and Employees of State and Local Government Institutions.
Zakatistovs believes that the JKP’s encouragement will set a precedent that the Saeima could decide in the future to set higher-than-statutory remuneration for public officials. Such an alternative, that public officials change their salaries arbitrarily, is unacceptable, the politician emphasized.
The leader of the KPV LV faction said that there is currently a “better or worse” uniform remuneration system established by law, so that deputies do not set a salary of their choice for themselves and other high-ranking state officials.
However, the proposal of the JKP not to increase the salaries of ministers will still have to be discussed in the KPV LV faction and coalition, the politician admitted.
Zakatistovs added that KPV LV will listen to and support the initiative of President Egils Levits and will vote against the increase of the President’s salary.
As reported, delaying next year’s state budget review process, the JKP’s discussion in the coalition urges not to increase the salaries of either the Prime Minister or the ministers next year.
