The piece by Rafael Morla and with the general direction of Maritza Reyes will be presented during the opening ceremony of the festival, which will take place in the Carlos Piantini room of the Eduardo Brito Theater.
“Zafra” explores the universe of the sugar industry in the Dominican Republic as a space of exploitation, resistance and corporal-aesthetic expression of the sugarcane growers and their families, its main victims.
The event, dedicated to the lighting technician and stage producer Lillyanna Díaz, will feature the participation of twenty companies and about 350 artists, who will perform on various stages in the capital.
Among the most anticipated productions are “El Gallo”, a work with a historical theme directed by actor and director Francisco Arias Cruz, and “Youth”, a proposal by Didier Ruiz, who is traveling from France as a special guest.
On October 22 and 23 in the Jesús Ravelo Room of the Eduardo Brito National Theater, the piece “El Gallo” will offer the public an intimate look at the life of former Dominican president Joaquín Balaguer, who governed the country for 22 years.
Theater lovers will also be able to enjoy “A Doll’s House,” inspired by Henrik Ibsen’s classic, a play that addresses the desires of the protagonist, Nora, who struggles to free herself from social conventions and find her own identity.
The presentations will take place in various rooms, including the Carlos Piantini and José de Jesús Ravelo of the Eduardo Brito National Theater; Máximo Avilés Blonda and The Dramatic of the Palace of Fine Arts; Manuel Rueda, in the Plaza del Conservatorio, and Casa de Teatro.
The VIII edition will conclude on October 30 with the staging of “Cecilia B” in the Avilés Blonda room, a production by the National Theater Company directed by Fausto Rojas, which pays tribute to great women representatives of dramatic literature.
