Zachary Kirkhorn steps down as CFO and Master of Coin at Tesla. He has worked in the company for 13 years, 4 of which he was the chief financial officer. He will be succeeded by the current chief accountant, Vaibhav Taneja.
Zachary Kirkhorn thanked the “talented, passionate and hardworking Tesla employees” as well as Elon Musk “for his leadership and optimism that has inspired so many people.” Kirkhorn did not give reasons for his decision to resign.
Note that Zachary Kirkhorn bore the daring title of “Master of the Coin” (a reference to the “Game of Thrones”) along with Elon Musk’s title of “Technoking”. As CFO, Kirkhorn helped the company navigate a difficult period following the Tesla Model 3 “production hell” that nearly bankrupted the company. His first year as CFO was marked by record sales for Tesla. He also achieved Tesla’s first annual profit, and under his financial leadership, the company has shown a profitable performance over the following years. As a result, the value of the company has reached the highest values in the industry.
Taneja joined the company after Tesla acquired SolarCity in 2016, where he served as vice president of accounting operations and corporate controller. Taneja held several positions at Tesla before becoming chief accountant in March 2019.
