Hockey striker Pavel Zacha helped New Jersey to win 2-0 over the New York Islanders with his first goal in the new NHL season. Washington goalie Vítek Vaněček caught 45 shots, but did not avert a loss to Buffalo 3: 4 after the raids.
Jakub Vrána scored on one Capitals goal. Tomáš Hertl assisted in the 59th minute with the winning goal of San Jose, which succeeded on the ice of Minnesota 5: 3.
New Jersey scored both goals in the opening period. Jack Hughes opened the scoring in the 17th minute in a power play and scored from Zach’s goal before the first siren. Ty Smith assisted both goals and is the sixth defender in NHL history to score in each of his first five starts in the competition. The 20-year-old bek can equal Marek Židlický’s record from the 2003/04 season in the next match.
Goalkeeper Scott Wedgewood covered 28 shots and scored his first win since February 13, 2018. “I got a lot of advice from a lot of people. Finally, something worked,” Wedgewood said. “It made me think a little more about what and how I do. I think I’ve improved in position, so I’m taking up more space in the goal. And I’m more patient,” he added.
Washington played the second match without four Russian hockey players, including Alexander Ovechkin, who violated league measures against the spread of coronavirus by a joint meeting in the room. Among the punished was the goalkeeper number one Ilya Samsonov and before the experienced Craig Anderson Vaněček got the trust of the coaches again. The Czech goalkeeper claimed another chance with an excellent performance in the last match in a 4: 3 victory after the raids over Buffalo.
Vaněček collected in retaliation all the goals in the basic playing time in overpowering games, with which Buffalo equalized to 1: 1 and turned the situation from 1: 2 to 3: 2. The Czech goalkeeper did not see a shot from the blue line at the first goal through the screening player, the other two fell after a shot from the right circle without preparation.
Jakub Vrána, who took the lead again in the absence of Alexander Ovečkin, passed Nicklas Bäckström to the equalizer in the 50th minute. The Swedish striker did the right moment to shoot, but from a negative angle he surprised Linus Ullmark, who knocked his shot into the goal. Vaněček was immediately lucky, Taylor Hall hit a stick from a penalty shot, which the Czech goalkeeper then kissed as a thank you for his help.
Vaněček covered all four raids in the shooting last time, now he was not enough to shoot Jack Eichel. Ullmark caught all three. “Both goalkeepers caught well,” said Washington coach Peter Laviolette. “I’m sorry we didn’t decide before the raids. We had three very good chances in the overtime to win,” he said.
In less than two weeks of the new season, Vaněček caught four matches in which he helped the team to gain six out of eight points, and he is the busiest Czech goalkeeper. Petr Mrázek caught two of Carolina’s three matches. Pavel Francouz got injured a week ago and has not yet reached the goal of Colorado.
Calgary goalkeeper David Rittich has not yet intervened in the game, watching the 2: 3 loss to Toronto from Sunday. Dominik Simon, who left for the Canadian club from Pittsburgh, is still waiting for the first point in the losers’ jersey. He unwillingly signed under the first goal of the match, when he easily wiped off the opponent’s shot and ended up in the goal.
Dominik Kubalík contributed one pass to Chicago’s 6: 2 victory over Detroit. Filip Hronek assisted with both goals, the teammate Filip Zadina was missing in the second match in a row due to the covid protocol. The main hero of the match was Pius Suter, who scored a hat-trick in his sixth NHL start. He hit twice in the first ten minutes.
“I’m excited,” said Suter, who signed a contract with Chicago last summer as the most useful and productive player in the Swiss league. However, he did not score in the first five matches. “I was happy for the first goal as well. Then it was easier to play and the second shot came. I had enough time for the third goal and it came out. It’s a great feeling. It gives me confidence. It’s a good start,” he added.
Hertl won the throw-in and then could watch Brent Burns’ fantastic individual action. An experienced defender slipped from the right guard between the defending players to the front of the goal and hung under the crossbar with a backhand.
Burns made his mark in 58:12, but in three more stadiums the winning goal was scored in regular time later. William Karlsson broke the goalless in the final minute and secured Vegas a 1-0 victory on the Arizona ice. Leon Draisaitl refused to extend the goal in the final second and thanks to his intervention Edmonton defeated Winnipeg 4: 3.
Jake Guentzel arranged for Pittsburgh to win 3: 2 over the New York Rangers a minute and a half before the end. Filip Chytil did not finish the match for the losers after the collision with Evan Rodrigues. Both resigned during the second period.
