Žabka Retail Chain in Czech Republic Facing Uncertain Future

In the Czech Republic, few retail chains have a really good reputation. Customers have already seen the practices of supermarkets, which sell them overpriced and, moreover, low-quality goods. That is also why they go to Poland or Germany, where they procure large purchases for weeks in advance.

The neighbors were already buzzing

Of course, it is not possible to go to the neighbors for every little thing. Smaller shops are thus gaining in popularity, whether they are convenience stores or larger chains such as Žabka. At the same time, it is paradoxical that they are not exactly having a bed of roses right now.

As it turned out, the Žabka retail chain is definitively ending in Slovakia. The only other country where he operates is the Czech Republic, and it is now a big question whether he will not meet the same fate here.

The cards are dealt exactly the same in both countries. Although few people know it, Žabka is ultimately owned by the Tesco company, which of course also runs its stores, while recently betting on the smallest format in the form of Tesco Express.

However, Žabka was operated on a slightly different basis, not centralized, but a franchising model. The shops themselves were thus run by different entrepreneurs, and the head office only gave them a uniform face and, to a large extent, also a product range.

There is a big change

It is possible that Tesco no longer likes this model and wants to bet everything on one card. This would correspond to the development of events in Slovakia, where by the spring of next year they will all be transformed into Tesco Express and will continue to be operated centrally.

Flip flops are extremely popular in the Czech Republic, precisely because you can quickly buy the essentials there. In addition, recently the chain significantly reduced the prices of its best-selling items and became more competitive.

Žabka’s really long opening hours are also very appreciated, which in most stores goes until at least 10:00 p.m. On the other hand, Tesco Express, which will theoretically replace them, adjusted its operating hours some time ago and today it usually closes at nine in the evening.
