Invited to “Culture Médias”, Yvan Attal indulged in confidences. The director revealed in particular to have spent the confinement with his son, without his partner and their daughters.
On Friday July 31, 2020, actor and director Yvan Attal spoke about cinema in the “Culture Médias” program on Europe 1.
Indeed, the director is in full preparation of his next film, a film adaptation of the novel by Karine Tuil, “Human things”. His plans, however, were delayed by confinement. Having said that, he was able to spend this time with his son.

HIS OPINION ON VOD PLATFORMS
The confinement has greatly impacted the cinema world and especially with regard to theatrical releases. It goes without saying that during the health crisis, the theaters were empty, so it was unthinkable to release new films.
Even in the midst of deconfinement, the situation remains quite delicate, as the director clearly specified at the microphone of Europe 1. The latter maintained that barely deconfined, people were not going to rush into the cinema, preferring clearly get some fresh air, like going to a café terrace.
Fortunately, there are other fairly cost effective alternatives for movie outings. Many directors have opted for video on demand services on platforms like Netflix or AmazonPrime.

The film “Seberg” by Benedict Andrews, in which Yvan Attal plays the role of Romain Gray, was also released on AmazonPrime on July 24, 2020.
For his part, the actor / director does not think that VOD platforms are a problem. That said, he is optimistic that theatrical cinema releases can quickly resume service.
WITH HIS SON DURING CONTAINMENT
Due to confinement, Yvan Attal also had to delay his plans and in particular his next film, an adaptation of the novel called “Human things”:
“Just before the confinement, I was in New York (…) and I returned to prepare this film by Karine Tuil that I was supposed to prepare March-April and shoot June-July. Boom, we are confined.”
Although he found himself far from his companion, with whom he never married, but also of his daughters, who had remained in New York, this confinement was bad for good since he had the opportunity to spend it with his son.
You must know that director regularly travels between New York and Paris. On the one hand, Charlotte Gainsbourg and their daughters, Alice born in 2002 and Zoé born in 2011, live in New York and on the other hand, there are things that hold him back in France.
Not only does he have to go there regularly for work reasons, but in addition, Ben, their eldest son, born in 1997, has decided to live in Paris.
The one who was confined with his son, also had time to do something else :
“It was very very very strange what. But it’s not so bad actually. (…) to have the possibility to do a little of the things that you didn’t have time to do all the time.”
HER RELATIONSHIP WITH HER SON
This is not the first time that Yvan Attal evokes his son in an interview, he had done the same, in October 2019, and still in “Media culture”.
If he originally came to promote “My Stupid Dog”, a movie he starred in with his partner, he ended up making revelations about Ben.
Finding similarities with the character of a father that he plays in this film, he quickly drew a parallel with the father son relationship that he maintains with the latter:
“I think he’s a little angry like me, he’s grumpy like me, and I think he wants to get rid of his children, like me (laughs), but that he loves above all their children.”
The actor made it clear that he did not really intend to get rid of his children but that sometimes his son’s behavior exasperates him.
He is particularly annoyed by the fact that he wanted to leave and move to Paris to finally come back. He says he’s gotten used to the fact that he’s not always at home.
Obviously, Ben left shortly after, since he was in Paris when he found himself confined with his father.
A CAREER OF COOK
In general, children tend to follow in their parents’ footsteps. That said, Ben Attal intends to chart his course in another way. Although they are the son of an actor / director and a singer, he intends to make career as a cook.
