Yuri Grigorovich: Celebrating the 97th Birthday of an Outstanding Choreographer

Yuri Grigorovich celebrates his birthday on January 2. The outstanding Soviet and Russian choreographer, choreographer, ballet dancer, teacher and publicist turns 97 years old. The birthday boy was congratulated by a telegram from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“Please accept my heartfelt congratulations on your birthday. You have devoted your entire life to the ascetic service of art, to the enhancement of the great traditions of Russian ballet, and to the education of young artists. Your multifaceted creative and mentoring activities are a vivid example of the highest professionalism and dedication to your chosen work,” the congratulations say, published on the Kremlin website. The President wished Grigorovich health and good spirits.

One of the most outstanding choreographers of the 20th century, Yuri Grigorovich was born on January 2, 1927 in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). He began his creative career as a soloist at the Leningrad Opera and Ballet Theater named after Kirov, and in 1961 became the theater’s choreographer. From 1964 to 1995 he served as chief choreographer of the Bolshoi Theater. He has the titles of Hero of Socialist Labor and People’s Artist of the USSR. Grigorovich is a holder of the Order of the Holy Apostle Andrew the First-Called, the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, I, II, III degrees and two Orders of Lenin. He is the author of eight original ballets and editions of almost all classical ballets in the Bolshoi Theater repertoire.
