Yukon Environment Minister released from hospital and back in Whitehorse

Yukon’s environment minister has been released from hospital in Vancouver and is returning to the territory to complete his convalescence in Whitehorse, a government spokeswoman said.

Nils Clarke was hospitalized following a car accident south of Whitehorse on August 2, while returning from the salmon celebration at McClintock Bay Resort. The minister was then flown to Vancouver.

The minister was in the vehicle with his deputy minister, Michael Prochazka. Their car was hit by another vehicle on the road and Michael Prochanzka lost his life in the accident.

In a statement released last week, Nils Clarke said he was hopeful of a full recovery from his injuries. He and his family thanked the community for their wishes for a speedy recovery.

Until he returns to office, Minister Richard Mostyn is taking charge of the Department of Highways and Public Works, and Minister John Streicker has temporarily taken over the Department of the Environment.

Brian Young, who has served as Assistant Deputy Minister of the Environment since 2023, has been appointed Acting Deputy Minister of the Environment, replacing Michael Prochazka.
