Yuji Naka explains the biggest challenge they faced in creating Phantasy Star Online – Nintenderos

Phantasy Star Online is already approaching its 20th anniversary and, to celebrate it, the medium Porygon has recently interviewed its producer, Yuji Naka. In the interview, the creative has commented on the challenges they had to face when they started working at Phantasy Star Online almost 20 years ago.

Now we are already looking forward to the arrival of Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis to Nintendo Switch, recently confirmed. However, it is interesting to know the origins of the series.

I remember that the biggest obstacle was trying to figure out how to make people from all over the world play online in an era when the Internet was not yet available everywhere. When we discovered that even with the use of fiber optics, information only traveled seven and a half times around the world per second, we knew that we couldn’t build games normally. So we wanted to better understand this environment and we developed ChuChu Rocket first, and then we took what we learned to develop Phantasy Star Online.
