There is a group of organisms that, due to the nature of their behavior, cause repulsion on our part towards them. Such is the case of flies, small insects that on more than one occasion cause us severe headaches, even spoiling entire meals.

However, like all living beings, flies play a fundamental role in maintaining the integrity of terrestrial ecosystems. These curious winged insects feed on organic matter that contains large amounts of nitrogen (for example, feces); In this way, the flies help to fix this precious element to the terrestrial soil, contributing extensively to the nitrogen cycle.

Furthermore, as we all know, flies belong to the group of insects that undergo metamorphosis. This means that at a certain life stage they have a larval stage. In flies, this larval stage feeds on decomposing organic matter, degrading it and transforming it into important elements for the soil. In this way, the flies in their larval stage contribute their grain of sand in maintaining the soil structure, providing nutrients and fertilizers to the roots of the plants.

“The contribution that flies make to the ecosystem is to reduce decomposing organic matter and transform it into useful elements for the soil and for plant fertilization,” explains Eduardo Parra, a retired agricultural engineer and entomologist from SENASA (National Health Service). and Food Quality).

On the other hand, it should be pointed out that since flies have the nature of resting on this type of organic matter, their body is colonized by bacteria, fungi and viruses, making them strong carriers of these microorganisms, which are a problem for human health, since they have the ability to cause dysentery, typhoid, paratyphoid… etc.

In addition to their role as decomposers in the food chain, flies also serve as prey for other insects, arachnids, and even plants.
