State-owned Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB) reported that it has experienced an increase in the sale of granulated urea during the first seven months of this year. In total, 40,515 metric tons (MT) of this fertilizer have been sold, with 63% destined for the department of Santa Cruz, known as the agricultural heart of Bolivia.

According to Gabriela Delgadillo Salazar, manager of Derived and Industrialized Products at YPFB, this figure represents an increase compared to the same period in 2023, when 39,283 tons of urea were sold. This increase in demand reflects the importance of this fertilizer in crops in the department of Santa Cruz, where crops such as soybeans, sorghum, corn, sugar cane, sunflowers and wheat are produced, which require the application of urea to improve their yields.

Distribution of urea fertilizer in Bolivia

Of the total fertilizer produced at YPFB’s petrochemical complex, 34% was distributed in the departments of Cochabamba, La Paz and Tarija, while the remaining 3% was destined for other departments in the country. In addition to farmers and wholesale distributors, YPFB has also sold urea to public entities such as the Ministry of Defense, the Strategic Company for the Production of Fertilizers and Fertilizers, Granorte SA, Unión Centro Veterinario SRL and the Agricultural and Livestock Association Unión de Cañeros Guabirá, among others.

Self-sufficiency in urea production in Bolivia

Thanks to the production capacity of YPFB’s urea plant, Bolivia has significantly reduced the need to import this input, covering 99.99% of the local market with national production. This achievement not only benefits farmers by reducing costs, but also strengthens the local economy by maintaining affordable prices.

Sales projections for the rest of the year

YPFB estimates that urea sales will continue to grow and are expected to exceed 70,000 tons by the end of this year. This increase in demand will be boosted by the upcoming sugar cane fertilization campaign, one of the main crops in Bolivia.
