The new feature was announced by YouTube today in a blog update, which confirmed that users should reveal whether they’ve used AI in the “coming months.” to create their content.
If the user confirms that he or she AI To help create the video, a label will be added to the upload that will be visible to viewers.
“To address this concern, we will be introducing updates in the coming months that will inform viewers when the content they are seeing is synthetic,” the update said.
It added that the label should be used on material that is “realistic” and will be visible in both full-length videos and YouTube Shorts. That said, the term “realistic” remains broad and further details on the content involved are expected to be shared at a later date.
“Specifically, we require creators to disclose when they have created modified or synthetic content that is realistic, including the use of AI tools,” the blog post added.
“When creators upload content, we have new options they can choose from to indicate that it contains realistically modified or synthetic material. For example, this could be an AI-generated video that realistically depicts an event that never happened, or content in which someone says or does something that they did not actually do.”

The ‘sensitive topics’ mentioned are later explained as content around elections, ongoing conflicts, health and more.
In addition to cracking down on AI-generated content in general, YouTube has also confirmed plans to crack down on music powered by artificial intelligence – namely content that mimics an artist’s voice.
“We are also introducing the ability for our music partners to request the removal of AI-generated music content that mimics an artist’s unique singing or rapping voice. When determining whether to grant a takedown request, we consider factors such as whether the content is the subject of news reporting, analysis, or criticism of the synthetic song.
It continued: “These takedown notices will be available to labels or distributors representing artists participating in the early AI music experiments. We will continue to expand access to additional labels and distributors in the coming months.”
The blog post did not reveal the exact date these changes will take effect. However, the platform has confirmed that users who fail to flag their AI-powered videos will be banned from the video and persistent violators will be banned from the YouTube Partner Program.

YouTube’s upcoming restrictions on AI-generated content follow those of the Council of Music Makers (CMM), which in September published five fundamental rules that companies want to embrace when it comes to music AI development. technologies.
These include respecting the personal data rights of music creators, sharing the financial rewards of AI music fairly and with clear labeling of AI-generated works.
Artists across the music industry have mixed feelings about the increasing prominence of artificial intelligence in songwriting.
Grimes, for one, is backing the concept and even unveiled Elf.Tech – her own AI voice-imitating software that allows fans to record and release music using her voice.
However, others are less accepting of this. Those who have criticized it include Sting, who said AI “doesn’t impress” him, Stereophonics frontman Kelly Jones, who said art is about “the expression of a real person,” and Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan, who said he had “no worries” about AI. in music because it “won’t affect my creativity.”
In other AI news, earlier this month a new study found that more than half of artists would choose not to disclose that they use AI to help create their music.
