YouTube stopped classifying 720p as “high resolution”, only 1080p and higher

For many years, 720p has been called – HD (High Definition). But according to a new change released by YouTube, 720p is no longer HD. YouTube is no longer called 720p HD, anything below 1080p is standard resolution.

We know how things are in the world of video. If it’s 360p or 480p, we directly call it “standard resolution”. When it is 720p or higher, it is “high resolution”. Next, we break down the “high definition” category into Full HD, UHD, and so on.

But for many years, 720p has been HD. In fact, we still have tons of monitors and displays with 720p resolution. But it seems that people on YouTube totally disagree with the nickname “HD” next to “720p.”

If you open YouTube right now, in Safari, Chrome or Edge, play the video and continue to choose the manual playback resolution, the 720p option does not have an “HD” icon in front of it.
