YouTube had announced that it would delete fake news about the US election. Now they should stay online – for freedom of expression.
Effective immediately, videos that make false claims of fraud, error, or glitches in the 2020 presidential election or previous US elections will no longer be deleted. Because YouTube says: Even if some lies were curbed by deleting fake news, it could be that certain opinions were also inadvertently restricted. According to YouTube, the change is intended to protect democracy and freedom of expression.
However, lies about the election itself, for example about the time of the election or the validity of postal votes, should continue to be removed.
Dangerous decision?
The independent organization Free Press asked YouTube to withdraw the “dangerous decision” immediately. YouTube’s justification is “completely wrong”, because hate and fake threaten our democracy – not the deletion of such content. Many experts fear that in a world where facts matter less, democratic debate is at risk.
Twitter had promised to take action against false information – not anymore:
In the EU there is a voluntary code of conduct for online platforms. Twitter probably doesn’t feel like it anymore.
