YouTube may drop 4K resolution for its free option

Multiple users of Youtube have notified that the platform has removed the option to view videos in 4Ka mode that would only be available to subscribers to its payment service.

YouTube currently has several modes: YouTube, which is free, YouTube Premium (which requires a monthly payment and has perks like unlimited content playback without ads), and YouTube Music, which focuses on music. The latter has a huge library of songs and shares similarities with streaming platforms like Spotify or Apple Music.

In the free version, the most popular among users, videos can be viewed in different resolutions, from 240p, which is the lowest, to 2160p (4K) and 7680p (8K).

However, some users have reported via Twitter and Reddit that the platform has stopped offering support for 4K resolution in free mode, as collected by MacRumors.

In this way, only subscribers to YouTube Premium would have access to content in that quality, as reflected together with that resolution in several screenshots shared by the individuals concerned.

At present, the platform has not confirmed that it is testing to implement this restriction on free YouTube accounts.
