YouTube makes vertical videos of short films available to televisions – IT Pro – News

YouTube makes short vertical videos of the Shorts platform available for television. Making and watching videos of 15 to 60 seconds has long been possible on mobile and desktop devices.

Shorts experiences are optimized for mobile use, so the videos have a portrait orientation, but such videos on TVs don’t exactly make sense. Therefore suggests YouTube who researched what users wanted most. For example, a single on-screen video with information in the black areas of the screen turned out to be more popular than the regular YouTube video player design or a variant where three short videos were tiled side by side.

So the design chosen is a single video in view, which uses the unused portions of the screen next to the video for additional functionality, such as displaying the title and the Like and Dislike buttons. Perhaps more features will be added in due course, such as related tags and comments. In the coming weeks, Shorts will be available on 2019 and newer TV models and “newer” game consoles, likely as an app update.
