Video platform YouTube has announced stricter restrictions that will control content that shows and describes various eating disorders. Some of these videos will not be accessible to minors.
The first thing will be that YouTube will no longer publish and remove from its website all videos related to eating problems. Including content that simulates related issues. Videos that specifically highlight eating disorders are already banned from YouTube, but the new restrictions will affect content that is indirectly related to the topic.
The next restriction will be that underage users will not have access to videos that talk about eating disorder recovery. They won’t be completely banned and removed from YouTube, but they will be age-restricted. In addition, under such videos, specific countries will publish resources that can be used officially to address eating problems.
Similar restrictions have previously been carried out by the social network Pinterest, which has already banned the publication of advertisements related to weight loss on its page from 2021. TikTok also bans content that highlights eating disorder symptoms such as over-exercising or short-term strict diets.
