YouTube Experiments with Countdown Timer in Adblock Check: Users React on Reddit and Neowin

YouTube seems to be experimenting with a countdown timer in the adblock check. A Reddit user shared a screenshot of the check that also included a countdown clock. Several other Reddit users claim to have seen the same notification, with timer.

The countdown timer is located at the top right of the adblock checker and has a yellow color. That’s what the screenshot shows via Reddit is spread. According to the editors of Neowin the time period of the clock would be 30 to 60 seconds and then an advertisement would start playing, although this has not been confirmed by YouTube. The notification also contains the message that ad blockers are not allowed on YouTube. Users are then informed that they will no longer be able to view videos on the platform unless they whitelist YouTube or disable the ad blocker. Finally, YouTube Premium is also mentioned. This is a subscription to the platform, which means that advertisements are no longer visible, among other things.

At the end of June, screenshots of an adblock check from YouTube also surfaced. Then a user was shown a message saying that he or she would be blocked after three videos unless the ad blocker was turned off. For now, YouTube doesn’t seem to have introduced adblock checks on a large scale. That YouTube is experimenting with it may indicate plans to do so in the future.

Update, 11 a.m: Article edited with claims from Neowin about the timer. Thanks to Andreas01.
