YouTube blocks picture-in-picture on iPhone website

That discovered MacRumors. With picture-in-picture it is therefore possible, for example, to watch a video while visiting a website or reading emails.

Shortly after the release of iOS 14, the option worked flawlessly on the YouTube website, but the addition has been blocked since this week. The function has not yet been added to the app.

Premium subscription

The block only applies to YouTube users without a Premium subscription. Those who take out this subscription can still use the option. A subscription costs 10 euros per month.

It was expected that YouTube would activate the block: playing videos in the background has been one of the advantages of a Premium subscription for a long time. Android users have to pay to get the same privilege with the video service.

The picture-in-picture mode seems to work on the iPad for non-paying users.
