“Śpiulkolot” won 6,243 votes. Second place, with 4,450 votes, was taken by the youth’s favorite farewell, “naura” in English, reported quite often last year. On the third – a saying and a retort, a kind of “remedy for every taunt”, that is, “Your old one”. More than 3,148 people voted for this not-so-new saying.

The jury also distinguished the word “unhook”, which means “turn on the microphone”, because it has become quite common and also very useful in distance learning.

– The plebiscite for the youth word of the year is one of the best social initiatives of recent years because it enhances everyday language. Linguists keep focusing on the fact that Polish is a literary language, but its communicative function is ignored when it serves to make people create communities, says Dr. Małgorzata Majewska from the Jagiellonian University. – This year’s words surprised me a lot, especially two neologisms – she added.

– It is very good that the “sleeper plane” won, because it has very good associations. That’s a nice word. I didn’t like “Eluwin” and “Autumn”, but if the “sleeper plane” won, it is very good news – said Karol Kosiorowski, the reporter of Onet.

The Youth Word of the Year is a plebiscite organized by the Polish Scientific Publishers PWN in cooperation with the University of Warsaw. Its aim is to identify the most popular words, terms or expressions among young people. However, as the organizers explain, the Youth Word of the Year does not have to be new, slang or the most used of the year.

ENTR is a new space for an open and authentic discussion about the present and future of young Europeans. Its aim is, above all, to foster a dialogue on the main problems of the young generation, while taking into account everything that makes them diverse, and to cultivate awareness of its European identity.
