Youth hostels came out of the red in 2019

A reduction in costs at all levels enabled the establishments to gain a net gain of 28,200 francs after a loss of 2 million francs in 2018.

Swiss youth hostels managed to make a profit in 2019, thanks to a reduction in costs at all levels. These establishments made a net gain of 28,200 francs after losing 2 million francs the year before.

Operating profit (Ebit) was 33,500 francs against a loss of 1.9 million francs in 2018, according to a statement released on Tuesday.

In addition, sales rose 2.4% to 46.6 million francs. 2019 was an exceptional year, notes the association.

Overnight stays also increased by 1.9% to 736,500, 70% of which were occupied by the Swiss. In contrast, tourists from Germany and South Korea, in second and third place respectively, fell.

Fiscal 2020 also started well before being hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic. Over the first two months, overnight stays jumped 10% over one year.

The winter season, which runs until the end of April, however, ended in a fall of 25% due to the travel restriction measures linked to the Covid-19.

It is still too early to comment on the rest of 2020, but the association has noted a resumption of reservations in recent days.
