Nice footballer Youssef Atal, prosecuted for distributing a video calling for a “black day for the Jews,” was given an eight-month suspended prison sentence for inciting hatred on Wednesday, Nice-Matin reported.
He must also pay a fine of 45 thousand euros. In addition, Atal must publish the court’s decision at his own expense in the regional daily Nice-Matin and in the newspaper Le Monde.
Previously, the Algerian footballer posted a video on a social network in support of Palestine in the Middle East conflict with Israel; he later deleted the post. Atal later apologized for the video, and the club suspended the player from matches and training.
Atal, 27, has been called up to Algeria’s squad for the African Cup of Nations, which starts next week in Ivory Coast.
