Will your smartphone soon become your guardian angel? He may well, in the near future, be able to warn you when you have drunk too much alcohol, reports the CNN on his site.
A team of researchers from Stanford University published a report in the Journal of Alcohol and Drug Studies. His idea? Make the smartphone detect when its owner is drunk, simply by analyzing the way he walks.
Thanks to the accelerometer
An application on the device could be able to recognize the behavior of a drunk person thanks to measurements made by the accelerometer, a sensor already present on smartphones and which is used in particular to automatically switch from portrait mode in landscape mode when you turn your mobile to take a photo.
The researchers tested 22 adults aged 22 to 43, getting them to drink to achieve a blood alcohol level of 0.2%. They asked them to take 10 steps with a smartphone equipped with the app. The results have lived up to their hopes. In 90% of the cases, the device was able to detect the drunkenness of the person.
Progress still needs to be made so that the application is available to everyone, particularly in terms of the detection rate and the position of the smartphone on the person. The researchers hope to make it accessible to the public within five years. It could be useful to avoid traffic accidents, in particular.
