Colorectal cancer is a malignant tumor of the mucosa or inner lining of the colon or rectum. Around 40% of cancers affect the rectum and 60% the colon.
They develop from cells that line the internal wall of the colon or rectum, mainly, by progressive transformation of a benign polyp.
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in men (after prostate cancer and lung cancer) and the second in women (after breast cancer). In 2017, there were an estimated 44,000 new cases of colon or rectal cancer (55% of diagnoses concerned men and 45% women).
