If you’ve recently logged into Instagram and are confused by the way your inbox looks, know that it’s because of the latest Instagram update. On Tuesday, Instagram rolled out a note sharing feature that allows users to share texts and emojis with others in the same way you share a photo in your story.

The Direct Message (DM) inbox page now has a banner at the top showing profiles and the message users have shared. To add your message, click on your photo, type your text and send.
The Note feature uses the same model as sharing Stories. Messages of 60 characters only stay on your profile for 24 hours. Users also have the ability to easily react to other people’s notes by clicking on the note and sending an emoji or a reply message. Messages will appear in the recipient’s DMs.
Compete with BeReal
The goal of this feature is to facilitate conversations between users and “give people a relaxed and spontaneous way to express themselves and connect with each other” according to instagram. This is another step in building Instagram as a messaging app, beyond just sharing images.
The creator of the app is also testing a new feature that could become Instagram’s version of BeReal. With this feature, users will be able to share what they are doing right now with other users. Like BeReal, this feature will come with daily notification reminders.

Finally, the app is testing group sharing features such as group profiles, similar to Facebook groups, and collaborative libraries where users can create collections of shared posts with their friends.
