Your health will cost you 200 euros more next year even if you are not sick

A compulsory expense will result in additional costs for 95% of French people.

Will the French health system remain as “generous”? Indeed, France has the reputation of being a country where the population pays little to cover their medical costs. Consultations, hospital visits or the purchase of medicines are often reimbursed to patients. If citizens pay little money to access care, it is because the health system is based on a double reimbursement mechanism. Social Security covers part of the costs, while mutual insurance companies cover the rest.

However, although Social Security coverage is free, you have to pay to have mutual insurance. In France, 95% of the population has mutual health insurance, or more than 65 million French people. Only 3 million citizens do not have this additional protection. However, this coverage represents a significant cost for policyholders, which is set to increase considerably in 2025.

This new increase in the price of mutual insurance is part of a trend observed in recent years. Mutuals had already increased their prices by 4.7% in 2023. Then, in 2024, they had further increased their prices by 8.1% on average. If prices skyrocket again in 2025, it is because mutual insurance companies are facing ever-increasing expenses. They therefore choose to pass on these additional charges on the invoices sent to policyholders. Students, private sector employees, civil servants and retirees… no one is going to escape it.

The aging population leads to an increase in medical care, hospitalizations and costly treatments. So many expenses that mutual insurance companies must cover. Furthermore, the increase in patients suffering from chronic illnesses requiring regular treatment weighs heavily on health spending. In addition, a government project will amplify this trend in 2025.

The executive plans to reduce the share of Social Security reimbursements, particularly for medical consultations, while the price of these consultations will increase from 26.50 euros to 30 euros in December 2024. Mutual insurance companies will then have to assume a greater share reimbursements. Faced with these new charges, mutual societies plan to pass these costs on to their members. According to the 2025 barometer from the broker Reinsurez-moi, contributions will increase by 10.35% on average in 2025.

Concretely, according to Reinsure Me, families will see on average their mutual health expenses increase from 1,400 euros in 2024 to 1,508 euros in 2025. For retirees, the increase is even more marked, with contributions increasing by 3,151 euros at 3,393 euros. On average, the French will therefore pay 2,177 euros for their mutual health insurance in 2025, or 200 euros more than in 2024.

Some mutuals even plan increases of up to 20%, while others are limited to 6%. Overall, individual contracts will experience a surge of around 8.8%, while company mutual insurance plans will jump by 9.2%.

## World Today News: ‌The Rising Cost of‌ Healthcare in France

**[Intro Music]**

**Host:** Welcome to World Today News. Today we’ll be discussing a⁣ pressing issue‌ affecting millions of French citizens: the rising cost of healthcare. ⁣Joining us⁢ today are two⁣ esteemed guests: Dr. Jean-Claude Dubois, a⁢ healthcare ⁤economist, ‍and Madame Marie‌ Durand,‍ a representative from the French Association ‌of Mutual⁣ Insurance. Welcome⁣ to both of you.

**Dr. Dubois and Madame Durand:** Thank you ‍for having us.

**Host:**

Let’s dive right in. The⁣ article highlights a significant increase in the cost of mutual health insurance in France. Dr. ⁤Dubois, could you‍ elaborate on the‍ key factors ⁢driving this⁣ unprecedented‍ surge?

**[Section 1: Drivers of Increased Costs]**

* **Dr. ⁣Dubois:** Of course. Several factors are at play here. The aging population‍ in France leads ⁤to an increased demand for medical care, hospitalizations,⁢ and often more expensive treatments. Additionally, the rise‍ in chronic illnesses requiring ongoing management further ‌strains ⁢healthcare costs.

**Host:** Madame Durand, ⁢from the perspective of⁣ mutual insurance companies, how are these factors impacting your financial ⁤situation, and how are you responding to ⁤them?

**Madame Durand:** As Dr. Dubois mentioned, we are facing a steep⁢ increase‍ in‌ the ⁣costs we need to cover. We are committed to providing our members⁤ with comprehensive coverage, ⁣but these‌ rising expenses put a strain‌ on our resources.

**Host:** This ⁣brings us to the⁣ point of increased premiums for policyholders. ‍Could you‌ elaborate on the ⁢extent of these increases‍ and how they are ‍expected ⁢to affect⁢ different demographics, particularly families and retirees?

**[Section 2: Impact on Policyholders]**

* **Madame Durand:** Mutual health insurance premiums are indeed projected ‌to⁤ rise significantly in 2025. Families‌ will see an average increase, while retirees, ‌who often require more extensive medical care, will face even larger premium hikes.

* **Host:** Dr. Dubois, how do these ‍increases align with France’s ⁢reputation for having a ⁣”generous” healthcare system?

* **Dr. Dubois:**

France’s healthcare system is indeed⁣ renowned for its accessibility. ‍However, it‌ relies on a delicate balance between public financing through Social Security and private ‌contributions via mutual insurance. These rising costs threaten to disrupt this balance. ‍

**[Section 3: Sustainable Solutions]**

* **Host:** This leads us to the question of ‍solutions.

What steps can ⁣be taken to make healthcare⁤ more affordable while maintaining‌ its quality? ⁤Dr. Dubois, what are your thoughts on potential policy changes that could address⁢ this issue?

* **Dr. Dubois:**

I believe a multi-faceted approach is necessary. This could⁢ include adjustments to‌ Social Security ⁣reimbursement rates, exploring innovative healthcare delivery⁣ models, and promoting‍ preventative healthcare ‌measures to reduce the need for ⁣costly treatments ⁢in the ⁣long run.

**Host:** ⁤Madame⁣ Durand, from the perspective of mutual insurance companies, what‍ role can you play in finding sustainable solutions?

* **Madame Durand:**

We are actively working ‌with the‍ government‌ and patient advocacy groups to find solutions. This⁢ includes exploring ‌ technologies that can ⁢streamline administrative processes and negotiated pricing agreements with healthcare⁣ providers⁣ to help manage costs.

**Host:**

Thank you both for these insightful comments.‍ It’s ⁤clear that the rising cost of‍ healthcare is a complex issue with ‌far-reaching consequences. Finding‌ solutions will⁢ require collaboration between policymakers, healthcare providers,‌ and insurance companies, with the‌ ultimate ⁣goal ⁢of ensuring⁢ access to quality ⁣and affordable healthcare for all French‌ citizens.
