Paris. Eliesse Ben Seghir scored a brace and fellow teenager George Ilenikhena added the other goal as Monaco came from behind to beat Strasbourg 3-1 on Saturday in the French league.
Monaco’s goals came late in the second half and their speed and technique on the counterattack proved too much for Strasbourg, who had taken the lead in the first half.
The victory moved second-place Monaco three points behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain, who later face Angers.
In the match at the Stade de la Meinau in Strasbourg something unusual happened when referee Bastien Dechepy signaled that he needed to be substituted, as if he were an injured player. Dechepy pointed to his right thigh in the 57th minute and was replaced by fourth official Benjamin Lepaysant, who awarded Monaco a penalty in the 79th minute after reviewing the video.
Ben Seghir executed it calmly and the 19-year-old Moroccan midfielder then concluded a lightning counterattack in the 89th.
Two minutes later, 18-year-old Ilenikhena scored the third with a precise shot.
Strasbourg scored in the 29th minute when poor defending made space for Guéla Doué to score inside the left post past goalkeeper Radoslaw Majecki.
Also on Saturday, Lens faces Nantes.
On Friday, home fans booed Marseille when they lost 3-1 to Auxerre.
