A 19-year-old girl infected with covid-19 was raped by the ambulance driver who was transporting her to the hospital on Saturday night in India.
According to the newspaper “The Indian Express”, the violation occurred in the Pathanamthitta district, in the southern part of the Indian state of Kerala, last Saturday night. The ambulance driver picked up the young woman first and then another patient who was also infected with the new coronavirus. When the second woman got out of the vehicle when she arrived at the medical center, the young woman and the driver were alone.
According to the authorities, it was at that moment that the driver took the ambulance to a deserted place where there were no people and raped the young woman. When he left her in the hospital, the man asked for forgiveness and told him not to tell anyone.
However, the victim informed the doctors when he arrived at the hospital and it was the doctors themselves who reported what happened to the authorities. The woman also had recordings of part of what happened.
Authorities reported that the attacker, whom they identified as Noufal, is accused of attempted murder in 2019. The GVK Institute for Emergency Research and Management has also sent a statement announcing the man’s resignation.
The event caused a lot of outrage in the country, with several platforms of feminist activism asking the Police to prepare a report with the measures taken.
The president of the Kerala Women’s Commission, MC Josephine, also spoke out, saying that people with a criminal record should not have access to positions related to fighting the coronavirus.
