The Belgian victim is a young woman from Staden, near Roeselare. Mayor Francesco Vanderjeugd (Open VLD) confirms this. The woman was on a city trip in New York with her two sisters and their mother. The mayor was notified by the victim’s husband.
Foreign Minister Didier Reynders (MR), who happened to be in New York yesterday, emphasizes that the Belgian Consul General is currently on site with the victim’s family. “We are doing everything we can to assist them.”
Meanwhile, the minister also expressed his condolences on Twitter. “Our thoughts are with her family and her friends,” it said.
Moments later, Reynders added that 3 other Belgians were injured. It is about the father, mother and son of one family. All three are undergoing surgery. Reynders has no information about the severity of their injuries.
