Young people under 34 are already 13% of those admitted to hospitals for COVID-19 | Radio Valencia

13% of the people who are entering hospitals in this new stage of the pandemic are young people under 34 years of age. It is one of the statements that the Minister of Health and Public Health, Ana Barceló has made known in the interview conducted in Day by day this Tuesday.

Barceló has stated that, for two weeks, there has been a gradual rise in the number of infections and outbreaks, and with a majority of these infections in the age group between 15 and 34 years.

This reaffirms what the Councilor Barceló repeats over and over again and that is that most of the infections and outbreaks that are occurring have their origin in the social ambit, that is, in meetings of friends and family. A 58% of outbreaks have occurred in the social sphere. Something that, in addition, now in summer, with the holidays, increases. Faced with this risk, and given that in this area, the public administration cannot act, because it would invade the right to privacy, Conselleria has published a series of recommendations so that in these family gatherings the most elementary security measures are kept and thus remember that it is necessary to take extreme individual responsibility.

Minister Barceló firmly believes in these calls for responsibility and gives as an example the case of the Elche city, in which it was detected that contagions increased by family gatherings, since it is an area very prone to such encounters and a special campaign of awareness. The councilor assures that it has been noticed, and the positives are decreasing.

This greater number of infections and outbreaks is causing the number of people to also increase admitted to hospitals. However, Barceló assures that the hospitals of the Valencian Community are in a good situation to absorb these cases, since, at the moment, the number of hospitalizations is less than 10% of the peak maximum that was reached during the pandemic. And those admitted to the ICU represent 4% only.

Barceló insists that it is true that the highest percentage of admitted are people over 65 years, but young people are not spared from worsening the disease, because children under 34 years is already 13% of hospitalized people.

However, Ana Barceló recognizes that one of the greatest concerns continues to be the old people and, therefore, the nursing homes. A sector in which the number of positives is also increasing. Although Barceló assures that the situation in the residences is controlled, since a action protocol, and in addition a decree has been approved that will prohibit family visits and outings of residents in health departments or areas where a disease is detected increase in infections important.
