Young people honored with the Bertini Prize against forgetting

73 young people were awarded the Bertini Prize on Sunday in Hamburg’s Ernst Deutsch Theater. As part of four projects, they searched for traces of past injustice or campaigned for equal coexistence. The name of the prize goes back to the novel “Die Bertinis”, in which the Hamburg writer Ralph Giordano (1923-2014) describes the fate of his family during persecution during the Nazi dictatorship. The award is intended to promote projects that do remembrance work and recognize young people who are committed to fighting injustice.

The projects were awarded: “We will not give up YOU!” from the Nelson Mandela School, which opposes the threat of deportation of a classmate, “Against forgetting – remembering Ilse Löwenstein” from the Ilse Löwenstein School, in order to keep alive the memory of the school’s namesake, “Child Survivor Marione Ingram » by the Friedrich-Ebert-Gymnasium, which commemorates the Holocaust survivor Marione Ingram, and “Being human is a decision – you have the choice!”, a theater project by the Alexander-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium, which brings racially motivated acts of violence to the stage brings.
