“Young people are no longer surgeons”

The surgeon is not a job for young people. In fact, fewer and fewer recent graduates are taking the path of surgery. The alarm was raised by Pierluigi Marini, president of the Italian Hospital Surgeons Association, on the occasion of the opening in Milan of the 39th Acoi National Congress: “The September data relating to the choices on specialization schools tell us that they have been lost about 80 scholarships for general surgery. This means that young people no longer choose to be a surgeon. The big reasons are three. The first concerns a good formation that obviously they do not feel. The second is the need for a clear professional path within our structures that must be relaunched. And finally the all-Italian phenomenon of medico-legal litigation that continues to grow. These three major issues are perceived as a problem when young people choose to be a surgeon ”.

This 39th Congress therefore tries to give an answer to this crisis: “Here in Milan, precisely to send a great message on training, we have, for the first time in a congress, organized two very technological training centers where they will be trained in these days or so. 120 young surgeons. It is a message that we want to give in support of the restart of surgery as well because this is needed “.
