Young people are more likely to faint during vaccinations

Vaccinations are going fast. After adults, it is now the young people’s turn to get a shot against corona. For most this goes well, for others less so. According to Het Belang van Limburg, more and more young people pass out during vaccination. More often than their parents or grandparents.

The fainting can be related to several factors. “First of all, young people have lower blood pressure than older people. Combine that with stress before the injection and you immediately have a greater chance of fainting.” according to doctor Jos Vanhoof, who also says it could be due to poor preparation. “For example, they have not had breakfast, had too little to drink or had too little sleep, which makes them more likely to pass out.”

According to the doctor, it is not necessary to be afraid that fainting is a result of the vaccination itself. No, it has everything to do with stress, fatigue, too little food or a combination of these. In order to tackle the problem preventively, in some cases a different attitude is chosen during vaccination. Young people will not be pricked while sitting, but lying down.

“Because you often end up in a lying position when you pass out, blood can flow to your brain and other precious organs, causing you to regain consciousness. That is why it is also good to put the person on the floor in the event of a blood pressure drop and to keep the arms and legs up,” says the doctor.
