Young man stabbed to death in a park in Lower Manhattan, New York – El Diario NY

A 24-year-old man was fatally stabbed last night in a group fight in a park in Lower Manhattan (NYC).

Those involved are believed to be homeless. Two men clashed with four others at Sara D. Roosevelt Park near Broome and Delancy streets shortly after 8:30 p.m., according to the NYPD.

A member of the larger group pulled out a knife and stabbed the pair from the opposing side: one in the chest and the other in the torso.

Paramedics took both victims to Bellevue Hospital, where the man died from a stab wound in the chest. He was not immediately identified and no arrests have been announced. The other victim, also 24 years ago, was in stable condition.

The crime scene is a narrow but long park that extends for seven blocks and is surrounded by shelters. It has long been a critical point for traffic and consumption of drugs and camps for homeless people, he said Daily News.

This year there have been several cases of deaths and injuries in New York parks linked to homelessness and/or overdoses.

A recent NYPD report warned that Fatal stabbings are up 29% this year in the city compared to before the pandemic (2019). Attacks with knives have become more frequent in various scenarios: streets, buildings, homes, buses, Metro, parties, schools and even commercial establishments and ATM areas.

In September, a walker found a woman dead with several injuries in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. In mid-August, a man was killed while he slept in a park near NYPD headquarters.

In another similar case, a fight between homeless men in July left one victim fatally stabbed in Washington Squarean iconographic Manhattan park plagued by violence in recent years, despite being in the heart of the NYU university area, next to the bohemian Greenwich Village neighborhood and the beginning of the elegant 5th Avenue.

Days later, a Hispanic man was stabbed to death “at random” while he slept on a bench on Pier 84 in Hudson River Park, between the Circle Line tourist terminal and the Intrepid Museum, in Midtown West, Manhattan. A Latino teenager arrested in the case said he had gone out to kill “the first one he saw.”
