A 21-year-old man from the Old Parish, Gaeltacht area of West Waterford has tragically lost his life in a swimming accident. While swimming with friends at Whiting Bay, located 3km from Ardmore, the young man encountered difficulties and emergency services were immediately dispatched. Thanks to the Coastguard helicopter, Youghal lifeboat and gardaí, three individuals were rescued from the water, while two others made it safely to shore. Despite best efforts to revive him, the man’s body was located and he was rushed by air ambulance to Cork University Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. This secluded area, Whiting Bay, is known for its kilometer-long sandy beach, which is a popular spot for summer visitors and is safer than the busier Ardmore strand. However, the beach is also subjected to high winds and waves, making it a hotspot for surfers. The tragedy occurred despite dry but breezy conditions, two hours after high tide. The incident will be documented and presented to the coroner.
