A family in Bihar state, India, had a tough time when a 15-year-old boy lost his life after undergoing gallbladder surgery performed by a so-called doctor who, according to local reports, relied on YouTube videos to carry out the procedure.
This incident highlighted a problem in the most vulnerable and rural areas of the country, where many people pretend to be doctors and put the population at risk, by not having the necessary knowledge and relying solely on what they find on the Internet.
The story of the child who died because of a fake doctor
Young Krishna Kumar, aged just 15, was admitted to the Ganpati Seva Sadan clinic in Saran district on Friday evening. According to his relatives, the teenager had been suffering from persistent vomiting and severe abdominal pain. Seeking a quick solution to Krishna’s ailment, his relatives decided to take him to the clinic of Ajit Kumar Puri, a doctor whose true qualifications were in doubt from the start.
Desperate to alleviate Krishna’s suffering, the family decided to trust the supposed doctor despite their doubts about his expertise. According to testimonies collected by local media such as NDTV, the relatives only wanted the young man to stop vomiting, without imagining that the situation would end in an unauthorized operation and the death of the minor.
What happened in the hours that followed has been described as an act of gross negligence and an appalling display of medical irresponsibility. Ajit Kumar Puri, the alleged doctor in charge, determined that Krishna needed surgery to remove a gallstone, even though the teenager’s symptoms had begun to improve shortly after he was admitted.
The most alarming thing about this case is that Puri decided to perform the surgery without informing or seeking the consent of Krishna’s family.
During the operation, the supposed doctor’s behaviour raised even more suspicions among those present. According to family accounts, Puri not only performed the operation without their permission, but was also checking his mobile phone during the procedure, consulting YouTube videos to guide him through the procedure.
Relatives, who were watching the situation with anguish, said the doctor seemed to be relying entirely on online tutorials to perform the surgery, which sparked even more concern and fear among them.
As the operation was underway, Krishna’s condition began to deteriorate rapidly. The teenager started complaining of increasingly severe pain, and the family, visibly alarmed, tried to confront the fake doctor. However, Puri’s response was blunt and aggressive.
According to the Hindustan Times, when the family asked him why their son was suffering so much, Puri snapped at them: “Am I the doctor here or are you?”, refusing any intervention or criticism from his family.
The situation quickly deteriorated. Krishna stopped breathing in the middle of the operation, forcing the doctor to perform CPR to try to save his life. Although they managed to revive the young man momentarily, the family and medical staff decided to rush him to a more complex hospital in the city of Patna, but there was little they could do and the teenager died on the way to the hospital.
What happened to the fake doctor after the young man’s death?
Once Krishna died, the so-called doctor and his accompanying staff made the decision to leave the teenager’s body abandoned on the hospital stairs and fled the scene.
Krishna’s family was quick to file a formal complaint with local authorities, accusing Puri of medical negligence and malpractice. According to statements collected by NDTV, the relatives were convinced that Puri was not a certified doctor but an impostor who was posing as one, putting the lives of his patients in grave danger.
The local police have started a thorough investigation to nab Ajit Kumar Puri and the staff involved in the clinic. So far, the authorities have registered an FIR (First Information Report) and are conducting raids in search of the fake doctor, who is still at large. The Ganpati Seva Sadan clinic, where the operation took place, has been left virtually abandoned after the staff fled, leaving other patients in the midst of other procedures.
Krishna’s body has been sent for autopsy, and authorities are awaiting the results to determine the exact cause of death, although the main allegation remains medical negligence on Puri’s part.
