NEW YORK — A 19-year-old man was charged with murder on Wednesday for the tragic stabbing death of a Hispanic family, including his father, his father’s partner and his 5-year-old half-brother, last Sunday in a building of apartments in the Bronx, the New York City Police announced Thursday.
Jayden Rivera was charged with murder of multiple victims, murder with intent, involuntary manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon.
The horrendous crime occurred on Sunday, November 26, around 6:40 pm when authorities responded to an emergency call about an injured man inside a building located in 674 East 136th Street in the Mott Haven section.
Upon arrival, they found a 38-year-old man, identified as Jonathan Rivera, the suspect’s father, brutally murdered with a stab wound to the torso in the hallway on the first floor of the building, police said.
After the discovery, the agents found his partner, a 33-year-old woman identified as Hanoi Peralta, and their son and half-brother of the accused, 5-year-old Kayden Rivera, with several stab wounds.
The three victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Another relative of the victims was inconsolable as he cried at the scene, a day after the gruesome discovery was made.
“My son is the best father in the world,” Miguel Ángel Rivera said of his son, Jonathan Rivera.
A neighbor who saw the bloody scene told our sister network NBC New York that he heard some commotion Sunday night outside his home, what at first sounded like two men arguing.
“I heard a lot of screaming and then I heard a woman screaming in the background,” said neighbor Fernando Cruz. “What was happening in the hallway sounded very violent… I heard the screams and, like I said, then there was one last thing where the man said ‘Aaggghhh’. It could have been the fatal blow. And then everything calmed down.”
Neighbors said the three victims were a quiet but friendly family who lived together in the apartment. They often went to the cellar below.
“I see her every morning with her son and the boy who came to have coffee in the morning. They were very nice people, a very nice boy and the lady was very kind,” said winery owner Dahan Ali. “I was so upset I can’t believe it. They didn’t deserve those things, especially this family. They were a very nice family.”
An investigation is ongoing.
