Today it is difficult to imagine a world without computers. PCs, smartphones and the Internet have long been part of everyday life, just as much as toasters, televisions and refrigerators. Of course, new technologies don’t always make life easier. The public sector is regularly faced with tricky questions: Who plans, configures and maintains the hardware fleet? This is where the specialists come into play.
Eddie Hidalgo wants to become such a specialist. He is 18 years old and has been a trainee as an IT specialist specializing in systems integration in the school and sports department since August. A training occupation where skilled workers are sought in many places. But he consciously decided to do this training with the city administration: “I definitely wanted to do something in the IT area and I had no prejudices about a city administration, or rather I saw advantages for myself in the area of security, for example. And the working atmosphere is really good. “
The School and Sport Department has been able to offer such a training position again for 12 years. And when it comes to safety, training can also be followed by a permanent position, says Dennis Prudlik: “The goal is for us to train our own young talent. And Eddie Hidalgo prevailed against a total of 30 competitors. So we had a really good turnout.”
IT specialists specializing in system integration plan and configure networks. To do this, they network hardware and software components and instruct the users. They also identify malfunctions and errors and eliminate them professionally. Hidalgo currently often goes back to where he just graduated from high school: to school. Because this is the main field of action of Prudlik’s team. “It’s definitely exciting to be able to take part in the digitalization of schools,” says Hidalgo, who occasionally runs into colleagues at the vocational school, the Platz der Republik vocational college for technology and media. “People joke that I can get involved instead of theory.”
But Hidalgo has enough opportunity to do this outside of vocational school: “I was really well received by the team and had everything I needed to start, such as my laptop.”
As part of his three-year training, he will now design and implement complex IT technology systems. The team’s tasks also include troubleshooting, customer support and administration of network systems. “In the end, it’s not just about learning specialist knowledge, but also about exchanging ideas with those who will ultimately use everything.
