RALEIGH, North Carolina.- Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have already been sworn in and are the new US President and Vice President. The cabinet opens with a wide range of legislative proposals that could benefit Latino residents of North Carolina – who with optimism and reserve – hope that the promises will be kept.

North Carolina youth are optimistic about the legislation and ask the new president to keep his promise campaign.

“The members of our community feel optimistic; however, they have reservations because we have already been in this position,” said Laura Garduño, a member of the non-profit organization Sowing NC.

The Hispanic recalled that In 2008, then-President Barack Obama said he would push for immigration reform, But to the discouragement of the Hispanic community, this promise was broken.

“In 2008 there were similar circumstances, a president who said that he would carry out an immigration reform in the first 100 days, and that he had a majority in both Houses (Congress and Senate), but there were other priorities,” added Garduño.

For her part, María Gómez Flores, from the Vínculo Hispano, looks forward to the measures that Biden has promised to implement in matters of health, education and immigration.

“It was a surprise to hear that President Biden plans to do immigration (reform) that includes a change to citizenship for immigrant people,” he said.

In addition to immigration, Gómez Flores awaits new executive orders related to climate change.

“There is a global climate crisis. There are many initiatives that affect the community and we have to push in all phases of the Biden administration,” he emphasized.
