Young Esteliano wins first place in a local writing contest in Washington

A young man from Estelia won first place in an exhibition and writing contest held in a library in Washington, United States, an initiative called “Hope through the eyes of an immigrant.”

The exhibition consists of several essays that discuss different perspectives around immigration, such as: personal, family, common and global hopes.

The Estelian who won first place was Eddy Magdiel Gutierrez Aguilera, 25 years old, who is originally from the El Rosario neighborhood, in the city of Estelí. He emigrated to the United States a year ago and in addition to working focused on having a good future, he decided to learn the English language and thus was part of this contest.

Many people of other nationalities also participated in the exhibition and writing contest and it was held at the Port Washington Public Library, where the writings will be exhibited throughout the month of July.

This initiative is part of a program developed by such a library, focused on teaching the English language, pronunciation training, conversation classes, and to promote respect for the diversity of communities and the journeys and stories of immigrants, as Peggy O’Hanlon, program coordinator, told the Port Washington News.

Numerous themes emerged in the student essays, including peace, hope, and health. Eddy Magdiel Gutierrez told ABC News that he is proud of this achievement.

“The reason for my participation was to share with different cultures and learn something new every day, likewise, to learn the native language of the United States. This achievement, for me means too much, having the Nicaraguan flag with the first place is something that it has no price, just the same, I will have new job opportunities,” added Eddy Magdiel Gutierrez.
