Young Argentine Victim of Machete Attack in Mexico Honored Through Organ Donation

The 23-year-old young man from Córdoba, Benjamín Gamond, was brutally attacked from behind with a machete on a beach in Oaxaca, Mexico. Despite being transferred on a medical plane to Mexico City, he unfortunately passed away.

Benjamin, who had a serious head injury, was in critical condition and was preparing to undergo surgery. On Monday night, his brother Marcos confirmed the family’s decision to donate Benjamin’s organs, whose body is still in the main hospital in the Mexican capital.

In the midst of sadness, Marcos shared some moving words through an Instagram story, expressing his love and saying goodbye to his brother.

In addition, he stressed that organ donation was Benjamin’s wish and the family was working to make it a reality, despite potential complications caused by the ongoing judicial and police investigation into the attack.

Marcos also requested help to expedite the repatriation process of Benjamín’s remains to Argentina and emphasized the importance of the organ donation procedure being fast, transparent and in accordance with established standards.

According to information provided by the Mexico City hospital, a type A7 ablation will be performed, which means that seven of Benjamin’s organs, including the kidneys, lungs, pancreas, liver and heart, will be donated to people who need them in Mexico. , according to the existing waiting list.

The family hopes this act of generosity will honor Benjamin’s memory and help save lives, even though the organ donation process is complicated and painful. In addition, they hope to be able to repatriate his remains to Argentina after cremation.

The attack occurred during the afternoon of last Friday in the tourist area called Lagunas de Chacahua, in the municipality of Villa Tutupepec.

For reasons that are still being investigated, a young man attacked the three Argentines from Córdoba with machetes, identified as Benjamín Gamond (23), Santiago Lastra (22) and Macarena González (23).

According to what the relatives later told, Gamond was traveling to Mexico for the second time and this time he had settled in Tulum to work during the season in the gastronomic area and save money.

Next to him was Lastra, with whom he had been a friend since childhood and shared a taste for sport, since they met at the Tala Rugby Club; and Macarena, his girlfriend.

According to the Tutupepec Municipal Civil Protection Coordination, Gamond was seriously injured in the head with a machete and managed to be admitted to a health center in the area.

Meanwhile, the other two young people suffered sharp injuries to their hands and arms and fractures, for which they were treated and are evolving favorably.

The three injured were treated on the coast by paramedics from the Municipal Civil Protection and then transferred to the Ángel del Mar hospital in Puerto Escondido, until finally yesterday, Sunday, Gamond could be referred to Mexico City.

While the municipal police detained the suspect in the attack, whom they identified as Cruz Irving Martínez Flores (21), a native of Ometepec, Guerrero.
