Young are three-time losers in the corona crisis

Question: Mr Kuban, how badly does the corona pandemic affect the young generation?

Kuban: We, the young generation, are twice or even three times the loser of the Corona crisis. We have worse starting chances. There are significant shortfalls in digital education. The consequences of the pandemic are now even greater. The chances of finding a job after training or studying are particularly poor in this recession. At the same time, the federal and state governments are taking on EUR 300 billion in debt this year and next. This is a mortgage to be borne by the future generation. The restrictions on freedom hit the young particularly hard. Living out your freedom, traveling the world and partying sounds banal, but you do that especially at a young age and that contributes significantly to personal development.

Question: Federal Finance Minister Olaf Scholz sees enough scope for further financial aid and wants to incur further debts. Can we still afford this for a long time?

Kuban: The statement by the Federal Minister of Finance that there is enough money is a sign of poverty. Olaf Scholz does not do justice to his office. As Federal Minister of Finance, he should be the guardian of finances and not the one with the biggest donation trousers. That is a fatal signal. Someone who wants to become chancellor should be aware of their responsibility for future generations.

Question: The digitization surge in schools and universities is still a long time coming …

Kuban: The topic of digital education has not been on the agenda in Germany in recent years. We have to get faster and better here. It’s not enough to distribute a few tablets to students. Digital content and technologies must be standard today and must no longer be missing in any lesson. Many ask for an additional school subject, but what we need is digital content in every subject lesson, from geography to natural sciences to foreign languages and clear specifications as to how many hours per week in which grade level are taught with digital content and technologies. Because digital cannot be a minor. That belongs in every lesson.
