Marsden gained worldwide fame after his band Gerry and the Pacemakers’ hit “You’ll Never Walk Alone” became a football anthem.

The death was announced on Twitter by British radio host Pete Price late that afternoon. “After speaking to his family, I have to tell you with a heavy heart that the legendary Gerry Marsden MBE has sadly passed away after a brief illness, an infection of the heart,” Price wrote. “I send all the love in the world to Pauline and his family. You’ll never walk alone.”

Marsden’s family confirmed the death to the British news agency PA that evening. A corona infection would “in no way” be the reason for the sudden death, the relatives said.

Gerry Marsden comes from Liverpool, was born there on September 24, 1942. With his brother (who died in 2006) he first founded the band “Gerry Marsden and the Mars Bars”, later it became “Gerry and the Pacemakers”.

Marsden got along so well with the Beatles that they shared the same manager and producer and studio.

Three of the band’s hits immediately became number one successes in Great Britain: “How Do You Do It?”, “I Like It” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, which eventually became the anthem of Liverpool FC . But the hit is associated with football around the world.

The musician did not withdraw from the public at first. He was seen on British television for a long time and also played in a musical.

It wasn’t until 2010 that Marsden announced his end in the music business. His biography “I’ll Never Walk Alonepublished Gerry Marsden in 1993.

It is not yet clear whether his sudden death was related to his heart condition. In 2003 the musician received a triple bypass operation, and in 2016 another heart operation. His family only said that he died from illness.
