Four billion years ago, lava poured into the Moon’s crust, turning the Moon into what it is today. But volcanoes that spilled lava may have left behind a much cooler legacy: floes of ice. Two billion years of volcanic eruptions on the Moon may have created many short-lived atmospheres containing water vapor, according to a new study. This vapor may have been carried in the atmosphere before emerging as ice at the poles, according to research in the May Planetary Science Journal.
