Mashed potatoes are a popular side dish for many people, but did you know they have many nutritional benefits? Although additives such as butter and cream may increase the calorie and fat content, potatoes themselves contain many nutrients that benefit the body.
Dr. Noria Dianova, Executive Director of the National Center for Health Nutrition Research, says that potatoes are a starchy vegetable that has an average percentage of protein – 2 grams per 100 grams and carbohydrates – 16-17 grams.
It also contains a good percentage of magnesium, iron, vitamin B1, and niacin (nicotinic acid), which affects the nervous system.
She said that “potatoes are rich in potassium, which is beneficial for the heart muscles, but is harmful if there are kidney problems. As for vitamin B1, many suffer from a deficiency. in a small amount because its all refined foods.”
According to her, potatoes can be considered as bread, and in some cases they are even better than bread, because 100 grams of bread contains 40-60 grams of carbohydrates, and only 16 -17 grams in 100 grams of potatoes.
Potatoes are also beneficial for diabetics and for brain function, as well as being better than white rice, as they contain magnesium and dietary fiber which are beneficial for the health of the digestive system.
