We often do not take into account the full extent of the problem.
Many people do not have high cholesterol. After all, it’s hard to believe in something you can’t see or touch.
It is believed that the high content of lipids (fat) in the blood is clearly visible in a test tube with blood plasma. Pictures of scary clots of fat in the blood plasma are even circulating on the internet.
However, experts are sure that the appearance of plasma with the appearance of high cholesterol and the presence of plaques will not be seen. What clearly shows atherosclerosis is ultrasound images of blood vessels.

In the frames that doctors provide, arrows show plaques that block the lumens of blood vessels. A little more – and they can completely cover the container, and this can have a negative effect.
After these photos, you want to go on a diet immediately and never touch unhealthy food again. But does nutrition have a real impact on the development of atherosclerosis, answered the cardiologist Alexander Popov.
“Dyslipidemias (DLP) are conditions when the concentration of blood lipids is outside the normal range. This can be caused by acquired and hereditary reasons,” said the doctor.
Factors that increase lipids include:
- sedentary lifestyle
- smoking
- excessive nutrition with a majority of fatty foods, simple carbohydrates with a high glycemic index
With all the reasons and factors together, the risk of developing atherosclerosis increases significantly. And with age, the frequency of hypercholesterolemia almost doubles.
According to the cardiologist, with hyperlipidemia, the following foods should be eaten rarely and in limited quantities: baked goods, vegetables cooked with butter or cream, ice cream, fructose, sweet carbonated drinks, sausages , salami, bacon, pork ribs, hot dogs, organ meats.
“To this we add full-fat dairy products, saturated fat and hard margarines, palm, coconut and butter, coconuts, alcohol and any fried food,” said the doctor.
According to the expert, changes in diet do not always reduce cholesterol levels.
“For each patient, the risk of cardiovascular disease is calculated using the SCORE scale. After that one patient can’t do anything, and another has to change their lifestyle,” explained the cardiologist.
At the same time, if you are still prescribed a healthy diet, you must monitor your lipid profile after changing your diet no earlier than after 4 weeks and then after 12 weeks.
“To prevent CVD, a diet rich in fruit and vegetables, whole grains and fiber is indicated. The diet should include nuts, fish, poultry and low-fat dairy products. It is recommended to use fats from vegetable oil,” said Alexander Popov.
However, for patients who have a high and very high risk of developing cardiovascular disease, diet and exercise will not be enough.
“Such patients are immediately prescribed medications and their symptoms are closely monitored in the future to prevent the recurrence of cardiovascular diseases,” explained the expert.
Reference: Hyperlipidemia is a high level of lipids and/or lipoproteins in human blood. Hyperlipidemia is an important risk factor for the development of cardiovascular diseases, mainly because of the significant effect of cholesterol on the development of atherosclerosis.
