The discussion around decriminalization of abortion Up to 14 weeks of gestation she has regained weight in recent weeks. This, after the Women and Gender Equity commission rejected the idea of legislating on this initiative, passing the Lower House with a negative report.
The situation has generated tensions within the benches in Congress, where despite the experts’ considerations, on treating this issue as a public health issue, positions have been raised at the value level -mainly from the ruling party-, and others that point to the lack of guarantees for the project.
The discussion in the program focused on this topic Here is Debate of CNN Chile, together with the deputies Maya Fernández (PS), Natalia Castillo (Ind) y Catalina del Real (RN), in addition to the researcher at the Jaime Guzmán Foundation, Daniela carrasco.
In this context, Deputy Castillo pointed out that the debate does not necessarily start from the perspective of values of being in favor or against: “not only the reproductive and sexual rights of women start with pregnancy. Here the ideal would be that we could count on a comprehensive sexuality education plan“.

In addition, the independent parliamentarian detailed the factors that, in her opinion, are also part of the discussion: “being able to access contraceptives. We have seen in recent days how they have risen in price and the State does not have any public policy that guarantees them. About sterilization: 30-year-old women who are morally questioned and even they are accused of being with some mental illness for wanting to tie her tubes and abortion is another part of that, of recognizing that possibility of having rights over your body, that motherhood may be desired ”.
For his part, Carrasco insisted that the debate has a value basis: “if the child that is in the womb did not have a human condition, then there would be no ethical conflict and it would not be discussed both in Parliament, as in other places of debate. We have to understand that this is a moral discussionAnd when I refer to moral or values, I am not referring to the fact that there is a religious argument behind it, but rather what values are we going to be installing in society, what are we going to understand by person ”.
Meanwhile, Deputy Fernández, questioned the position of the FJG researcher, reaffirming that the decriminalization of abortion aims to legislate on a human right: “we we can not impose the value. It is also a secular society, a secular State ”.
“Abortions are performed in Chile and there are many women who travel, and I do not criticize it, but they have the possibility of traveling to countries where abortion is free. And who is left aborting in Chile, in clandestine abortions, where they can lose their lives? On the other hand, the Real deputy stated that this project points to a perspective of free abortion such as “method of contraception“. In addition, within his position, he supported the proposal of the parliamentarian Castillo on sexual education: “what we have to do is of course educate. First of all educate these women, young people and girls, in all that it means to bring a being to this world, and in the contraceptive methods that exist ”.
Faced with the allusion, Castillo questioned the RN deputy about her actions in Congress on these matters: “you voted against comprehensive sex education, and your entire sector made that project crash. “
“I voted against that project because it started with sex education for very young children and it was a project that I was not on the right line in my opinion, but I do feel that the older girls have to be educated ”, Catalina Del Real defended herself.
