There is nothing better than being able to rest in a clean bed after a tired and busy day, that good feeling of lying on a clean sheet and resting your head on the pillow. And since we spend about a third of our lives in bed, how often should we change the sheets?
According to a survey conducted in the UK, washing sheets fortnightly is considered the most common. On the other hand, a survey carried out by several local media, which pointed out that almost half of the male participants – who are single – in the country did not wash their sheets until after four months.

Microbiologist Philip Tierno, who works at New York University, recommended washing sheets weekly, in an interview with IFL Science. He explained that when we sleep we sweat and shed dead skin cells and the more time we spend wrapped in the same set of sheets, the more they become somewhat of a “perfect growing medium” for fungi and bacteria.

In other words, this means that not only do they start to smell, but they can also harbor health-damaging microbes. Thus, in summer, the recommendation is to change the sheets every four days and also air them every morning to avoid the accumulation of humidity, just pull the duvet back.
Additionally, research published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology found that bed sheets can be “allergen reservoirs,” accumulating substances that trigger allergic attacks, such as pet dander, pollen, mite debris and even fungi and bacteria and mites.
This means that not washing your sheets for more than three weeks increases the likelihood of harmful bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, which can cause everything from acne to pneumonia.
